RIO DE JANEIRO, Dec. 14 () -- Over 1.091 million people were murdered in Brazil in the past 30 years, more than the number registered in countries at war, according to a report released on Wednesday by the Sangari Institute.The number of murders increased 259 percent in the three decades, jumping from 13,910 cases in 1980 to 49,932 in 2010 in the country without territorial disputes, emancipation movements, or civil, religious, racial, or ethnic wars, according to the study by the non-profit organization.The murder rate rose 124 percent in the period, from 11.7 to 26.2 murders per 100,000 inhabitants.The report said between 2004 and 2007, 192,804 people died of homicide in Brazil, exceeding the number of 169,574 in the twelve largest armed conflicts in the world during the same period.There were 62 armed conflicts around the world during the years, in which 208,349 people were murdered, according to the study.In the Latin American nation, murders began to become more frequent in small towns and rural areas since the mid-1990s, the report said.In the past seven years, the murder rate in Brazil's metro areas registered a continuous decrease, while the rate in rural areas increased consistently as police repression in large metro areas drove criminals to other regions, the study showed."We must deploy public policies to deal with the increase in violence in rural areas, especially the border regions," the study said.The Brazilian government resumed the civil disarmament campaign in February. The number of murders dropped after the last civil disarmament campaign put in place in 2004 and the government expected the same thing to happen again.
