by Ben OchiengNAIROBI, April 30 () -- Countries that want to excel at the London Olympics, and at any Olympic Games for that matter, must go the Chinese way.Eight years ago in Athens, China finished second to the United States in the medals tally at the Olympic Games.Four years later at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, China topped the standings at home with a gold medal tally of 51, the highest ever medal haul since the Soviet Union took 55 in Seoul in 1988.This came as no surprise to those who know about sports because apart from pouring millions of dollars in showcasing its magnificent infrastructure and organizational capacity, China, a nation which takes huge pride in its sporting supremacy, also invested a lot in nurturing talent. The home advantage, so crucial on such occasions was of course a bonus. So, how did China, a nation which got 32 gold medals at the 2004 Athens Olympic Games cross the half a century mark in Beijing?Since finishing third in the medals table at the 2000 Sydney Games, China went back to the drawing board and adopted 'Project 119' that basically looked at the number of medals available in each discipline and devised a way of wining the maximum from them. The Kenyan National Olympic Committee chairman Kipchoge Keino concedes that for a country to excel at the Olympics, it must start preparing early for the Games."Serious countries start preparing for the next Olympics immediately the curtains close on the preceding one. They do a post mortem of the games and identify their weak areas and how they can be corrected and then embark on an Olympic programme," the veteran of several Olympic Games both as an athlete and official told  in Nairobi on Monday.Keino, who is also an International Olympic Committee (IOC) Council member, said those countries that want to do extremely well at the quadrennial games must have massive programme involving specialized coaches, expert trainers and world class facilities must be at the disposal of athletes. In Beijing, China reaped its harvest of gold mainly from its traditional strongholds of weightlifting (8), diving (7), gymnastics (9), and shooting (5).It also reaped its first gold medals in boxing, archery, rowing, sailing and trampoline. There was also a surprise gold in fencing in the men's individual sabre, China's first in 24 years.China came back to the Olympics in 1984 in Los Angeles, after a hiatus that ended in 1979 when the IOC reinstated it after accepting the country's demand that only one team be entered as the People's Republic of China, where it made a big impact by winning 15 gold medals to occupy the fourth place. In Seoul, China could only manage five gold medals and raised the gold medal tally to 16 in 1992 in Barcelona and equaled the tally four years later in Atlanta. In Athens, China finished behind the US by just four gold medals with 32.Keino says China is now on top of the world as a result of dedication and a lot of support from the state. So how will China perform at the London 2012? The answer is only several weeks away.
WASHINGTON, July 20 () -- U.S. President Barack Obama on Friday ordered an import ban on charcoal from Somalia, and expanded sanctions against those said to be imperiling security and stability in the Horn of Africa nation. In an executive order that took effect as of 2 p.m. EDT (1800 GMT) on Friday, the president authorized a ban on direct or indirect imports of charcoal from Somalia, saying that the trade generates "significant revenue" for al-Shabaab, a Somalia-based cell of al-Qaida.The militant group, branded as a terrorist group by the United States and several other countries, controls large swathes of the southern parts of Somalia.Since the outbreak of a civil war in Somalia in 1991, there has been no central government control over most of the country's territory, and the internationally-recognized Transitional Federal Government controls only a small part of the country. The transitional government, whose mandate expires on Aug. 20, is working toward eventual national elections in 2012.Obama also ordered expanded sanctions against individuals and entities that have engaged in acts threatening the peace, security or stability of Somalia, blocking the delivery of humanitarian aid to the country, or targeting civilians. The sanctions entail freezing of all assets under U.S. jurisdiction. The president ordered sanctions against some Somali individuals and entities in April 2010.

KUWAIT CITY, Feb. 2 () -- Kuwaitis are going to the polls Thursday to elect the 50 members in the country's outspoken parliament, in what is efforts by the country's ruler to end months of political standoff between the government and parliament.Voting started at 8 a.m. local time (0500 GMT) and will run till 8 p.m. (1700 GMT) at polling centers across the Gulf Arab emirate.A total of 286 candidates, including 23 women, were running for the new parliament across the five constituencies, each to be represented by 10 members in the parliament.Around 400,000 Kuwaitis were registered to vote in the fourth parliamentary election since 2006, the seventh since 1963 when parliament was born in the emirate.Kuwait bans political parties and all candidates contest individually.According to the Kuwaiti election law, candidates must be Kuwaiti by birth and must be 30 years of age on the day of election.Violence erupted on the eve of the general polls as Kuwait's riot police clashed with hundreds of tribesmen who stormed a local television station and tribesmen late Tuesday on Monday torched the election tent of a pro-government candidate over controversial remarks.Kuwaiti Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah in December dissolved the parliament and called new elections to seek an exit of the deteriorating situations caused by prolonged political infighting between the government and parliament. The dissolution came after Sheikh Sabah in November appointed Defense Minister Sheikh Jaber Al-Mubarak Al-Hamad Al-Sabah as the new prime minister, replacing Sheikh Nasser Al-Mohammad Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, who stepped down after months of rallies by opposition groups.Oil-rich Kuwait is the first Gulf Arab state to adopt a constitution in 1962 and elected a parliament the following year. The lawmakers are bestowed the right to question ministers or vote them out of office over irregularities or irresponsibilities. The al-Sabah family has ruled Kuwait for more than 250 years.
MADRID, May 3 () -- With the outcome of the BBVA Primera Liga title resolved with Real Madrid crowned champions on Wednesday night, the coming weekend's penultimate round of games in Spain focus on the battle for survival and in qualifying for Europe.Real Madrid will celebrate their title away to Granada, who still need a win to ensure their place in the top flight. Granada are five points above the drop zone with two games to play.Barcelona meanwhile entertain Espanyol in a local derby in which the main point of interest will be to see whether or not Leo Messi can add to his tally of 46 league goals.Valencia meanwhile can assure third place and direct qualification for next season's Champions League if they can beat Villarreal in the Mestalla Stadium.Villarreal are only four points above relegation and also need a win in order to assure their survival. However, they would also stay up if Zaragoza lose at home to Racing Santander. That looks unlikely as Zaragoza have produced an amazing fightback in recent weeks, while Racing are already relegated.Meanwhile Rayo Vallecano have also been sucked into the relegation fight and face a difficult away game to Sevilla, who need to win their two remaining matches in order to have any chance of a top six finish.Atletico Madrid are currently in sixth place and need to assure a place in Europe, but in a game played just five days before their Europa League final at home to Athletic Club Bilbao, they face a difficult game at home to fourth placed Malaga.Atletico coach Diego Pablo Simeone can't really rest players and risk seeing his side end the season without a place in Europe, while Malaga will virtually assure Champions League football with a win.Mallorca have suddenly emerged as candidates for a place in Europe and they take on Levante, who are still fifth in what promises to be a no-holds barred affair.Osasuna also have a chance of finishing in the top six and play local rivals, Real Sociedad. Sporting play Betis needing a miracle to avoid relegation, while Athletic Bilbao and Getafe have little at stake allowing Athletic to rest key players ahead of their European final.
2011 NBA All Star JerseysVIENNA, March 22 () -- Visiting Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said here on Thursday that his country will continue to put every effort on the settlement of the Syria issue. At the news conference after meeting with Austrian Foreign Minister Michael Spindelegger, Davutoglu said "bloodshed must be ended in Syria."Davutoglu said that Turkey hopes to establish the broadest alliance to end the conflict in Syria. Therefore, he will also discuss that during the coming visit to Belgium on Friday as well as at the meeting of Arabischen Liga.During the Turkish foreign minister's visit to Austria, both sides expressed satisfaction with the recent development of bilateral relations and the willingness to further cooperation.Spindelegger said Austria and Turkey share similar views on many international and regional issues, and to strengthen economic and trade relations and cooperation between the two countries has great significance. The bilateral trade volume in 2011 exceeded two billion euros (about 2.64 billion U.S. dollars) for the first time.He also said that the large number of Turkish immigrants living in Austria is the connection bridge between Austria and Turkey. At present, a total number of 240,000 Turkish immigrants are living in Austria, representing the largest foreign population in Austria. Due to the differences in religion, customs and language, the integration of Turkish immigrants has been an important issue faced by the Austrian government.
WASHINGTON, March 13 () -- U.S. Federal Reserve announced on Tuesday that it will remain the current ultra-loose monetary policy to support economic recovery."The economy has been expanding moderately. Labor market conditions have improved further; the unemployment rate has declined notably in recent months but remains elevated. Household spending and business fixed investment have continued to advance," the central bank said in a statement after its Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting held on Tuesday. The U.S. housing sector remained depressed. Inflation has been subdued in recent months, although prices of crude oil and gasoline have increased lately. The recent increase in oil and gasoline prices will push up inflation temporarily, but longer- term inflation expectations have remained stable, noted participants of the FOMC meeting, the powerful interest rate setting panel.Against the backdrop of low rates of resource utilization and a subdued outlook for inflation over the medium run, the Fed reaffirmed the policy decision to keep the exceptionally low levels of federal funds rate in current range of 0-0.25 percent at least through late 2014 to bolster economic recovery, an ultra- loose monetary stance announced by the Fed in January."The Committee expects moderate economic growth over coming quarters and consequently anticipates that the unemployment rate will decline gradually toward levels that the Committee judges to be consistent with its dual mandate," said the Fed.The U.S. Labor Department last week reported that the U.S. unemployment rate remained flat in February at 8.3 percent after declining for five consecutive months.Strains in global financial markets have eased, though they continued to pose significant downside risks to the economic outlook, noted the statement. The Fed unveiled no further steps including another round of bond buying program to shore up the recovery, as the recent string of positive economic news suggested that the recovery was on a stronger footing and FOMC members were split in their views of appropriate monetary policy action. The statement was approved on a 9-1 vote. Jeffrey Lacker, President of the Richmond regional Fed bank, voted against the FOMC statement for the second straight meeting, as he "does not anticipate that economic conditions are likely to warrant exceptionally low levels of the federal funds rate through late 2014".
