CANBERRA, Dec. 22 () -- Australia Immigration Minister Chris Bowen said on Thursday the federal government will work with Nauru, that would pave the way for a resumption of offshore processing of asylum boat arrivals.Bowen announced the move after the government said all options were on the table for discussion if the coalition was prepared to support its Malaysia people swap deal that will see 800 asylum seekers arriving in Australia to be sent to Malaysia for proceeding. He said the government would continue to push for its Malaysia solution and it was vital the coalition was compared to compromise as well."The opposition needs to support without amendment of the government's legislation to allow the government of the day to implement its policies ... to implement offshore processing," Bowen told reporters."The government will continue to implement its agreement with the Malaysian government if that legislation is passed, which would break the people smugglers' business model."As a complement to the Malaysia agreement, we are happy to engage with the government of Nauru to see if a processing center can be developed on Nauru."Nauru was used by the previous Howard government for processing under its Pacific Solution, aimed at ending the stand-off over offshore processing.Opposition Leader Tony Abbott has welcomed reports the government will consider reopening Howard-era facilities on Nauru as an offshore processing center for asylum seekers. He believed reopening a detention center on Nauru is key to stopping the boats.Abbott said he wished the Prime Minster had not been so stubborn that it took 14,000 "illegal arrivals" to force her to " stumble finally upon this truth that we do need Nauru."He claimed the mothballed detention center on Nauru could be up and running within a few weeks."That's great that the Prime Minister Julia Gillard has finally woken up to the fact that her stubbornness was getting Australia nowhere, but if she wants the Opposition to sit down and talk, we need to have a proposal in writing," Abbott told ABC Radio."It's good that the government has finally come to its senses on one of the three vital elements in stopping the boats,""Because it didn't stop the boats after it had been announced, it's a five-for-one people swap and it doesn't involve any serious protections for people sent there."However, Abbott also wanted the government's border protection regime to include temporary protection visas and the option of turning boats back at sea if it's safe to do so.Earlier on Saturday, an asylum boat carrying more than 250 people from Afghanistan, Pakistan and Iran, heading for Australia, sank and capsized in high seas, leaving about 200 people missing feared dead. Indonesian police are investigating three soldiers who are accused of being involved with the doomed asylum seeker boat.
