MADRID, Jan. 8 () -- Diego Simeone said he was satisfied following his debut as Atletico Madrid coach on Saturday night.Former Atletico midfielder Simeone was named as replacement for Gregorio Manzano before Christmas, and although his league debut as Atletico coach could only end in a 0-0 draw away to Malaga, late on Saturday night, speaking in sports paper Diario AS early on Sunday, Simeone admitted a certain satisfaction at his side's performance."It looks as if we were a side with character and we created some clear chances. We didn't have a lot of the ball, but we were solid in defense and looked to play on the break. We played better in the second half," said Simeone. The coach was delighted to be able to return to the club where he spent two separate spells as a player."It was a great experience, but the thing is that you don' t really enjoy it at the time because you are concentrating on the game. It was a tough match and the side worked hard.""I liked the solidarity and unity we showed, because you build a team from that. We had to sit deep in the opening 20 minutes, but in the second half we played as we wanted to play and we could have scored. Our work is going to improve bit by bit, but it is already beginning to show its fruits," assured the coach.

VIENTIANE, July 27 () -- UN and Lao government officials attending Friday's World Population Day commemoration in Vientiane, Laos' capital, emphasized their joint commitment to reaching universal access to reproductive health services around the country. The Lao government has been long committed to this goal, but progress has been slow and uneven. Reproductive health care includes many areas such as, assisted childbirth, voluntary family planning, and the prevention of sexually transmitted infections. There are many issues related to reproductive health that require attention in Laos. As UN Population Fund (UNFPA) Representative to Laos Esther Muia spoke out during the commemoration, "Every day here, more than two women in Laos die from complications during pregnancy and childbirth."As one of the poorest and least developed nations in the South- East Asian region, Laos has long struggled to reduce the its maternal mortality rate. Reducing maternal mortality is one of the Millenium Development Goals (MDGs) the government has targeted to reach by 2015.The primary cause of Laos' high maternal mortality rate is the lack of skilled birth attendance. The Laos government recently implemented a program to train midwives, and in the last few months 160 midwives have been nationally registered. At the commemoration Laos' Minister of Planning and Investment Somdy Duangdy thanked the various international agencies, including the UN, for their continued assistance to Laos. He identified universal access to reproductive health services as one of the government's highest priorities."Investing in universal access to reproductive health is a crucial investment for healthy societies and a more sustainable future, in particular to ensure that all young Lao people are healthy and productive to maximize our golden demographic opportunities which will last at least 30 years," said Duangdy.Duangdy continued that while the "access for reproductive health care services, such as family planning and contraception, is about 84 percent, the access to those services by the rural poor, especially among the youth, is still low."HIV has not so far been a major concern in Laos, with incidence generally lower than its neighbors. There are concerns, however, that infection rates might be on the rise.Esther Muia closed her speech by outlining the UNFPA's vision for Laos as, "a place where every pregnancy is wanted, every childbirth is safe and every young person's potential is fulfilled."
