TUNIS, Feb. 24 () -- Delegates at the Friends of Syria Conference on Friday in Tunis are mulling a United Nations cease fire resolution to guarantee access of humanitarian aid to Syrian civilians. The call for the resolution was launched by the Arab League (AL) Secretary General Nabil al-Arabi, who also proposed a "common priority reaction" to the permanent members of the Security Council with a view "to put an end to the bloodshed currently taking place in Syria."Arabi said that the AL would respect Syria's sovereignty, and refuse any form of foreign intervention so as to prevent civil war and meet the aspirations of the Syrian people towards freedom and political reform.According to Arabi, the resolution on the Syrian crisis is based on two imperatives, namely, putting an end to the killing of civilians and the launch of a political process between the opposition and the Syrian government.UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has appointed Kofi Anan, former UN Secretary General, as a joint UN-Arab League envoy to broker a peaceful resolution to the conflict, which could represent one of the "last chances" to set up a road map and a time frame in order to move Syria out of the current stalemate, Arabi said.
SUVA, March 12 () -- Fiji's former opposition leader has urged Monday newly appointed Constitutional Commissioners to uphold the 1997 constitution for the restoration of parliamentary democracy in the island nation. This is because the Charters Affirmation has said, "we, the people of Fiji, affirm that our constitution represents the supreme law of our country, that it provides the framework for the conduct of government and the people," Mick Beddoes was quoted by local website Fijivillage on Monday. In his comments on the process announced recently by Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama, Beddoes urged all Fijians, regardless of which side of the divide they stand today regarding the right way forward for Fiji, to participate in consultation talks "so that the ultimate outcomes achieved can be truly reflective of the real wishes of the Fijian people."People should be under no illusion about the daunting task that lies ahead and should accept the fact that there will be many pitfalls, obstacles and imperfections to encounter along the way, said Beddoes. But, if we can collectively focus on the end result being a return to a democratic and representative system of governance, then each and every one of us must do what we can do over the next 29 months to ensure we achieve that ultimate outcome, he added.Earlier on Saturday, Two Fijian politicians, Laisenia Qarase and Mahendra Chaudhry, expressed concerns about the constitutional consultations process announced by Prime Minister Bainimarama.Qarase, Leader of the Soqoqsoqo Duavata ni Lewenivanua Party and former prime minister, welcomed Government's move towards parliamentary elections, but said that Government has gone ahead to announce the key principles and values to be embodied in the Constitution, and members of the Constitutional Commission have been appointed, which are unilateral decisions by the government and not the outcomes of intensive consultations with key stakeholders.Chaudhry, leader of an Indian dominated party in Fiji, echoed Qarase by saying that the constitution review process announced by Bainimarama was prolonged and he was predicated in writing up a completely new constitution, adding there is a need to review the electoral arrangements, however there is no need to rewrite the entire constitution as proposed by the government. On Sunday, Fiji's Attorney General and Elections Minister Aiyaz Sayed Khaiyum stressed that no one will be stopped from taking part in the process as well as the elections even though this government had warned earlier that former politicians like Laisenia Qarase would be excluded from standing in the elections.
